So, the project! As well as reviewing dinosaur toys, I’ll also be doing a playthrough of JPOG, with DJE and PMEP installed to update all the graphics. The herbivores, for instance, are no longer the cannon fodder that they used to be, making confrontations with meat-eaters much more interesting. PMEP also adds in new behaviours for the dinosaurs, which are massive improvements over the fairly simplistic AI of the original and add a new layer of complexity. The result is a game that looks like it came out last year, instead of in 2003. These mods add a bunch of new graphical improvements, ranging from new dinosaur skins to new sky backgrounds. Vanilla JPOG looks nice enough but the textures on pretty much everything are incredibly dated. I’ve been mucking around with two of them, DJE and PMEP, and aside from a lot of other changes they make the game look amazing. It’s also very easily modified, so there’s a ton of mods out there for it. Despite being over 10 years old, it’s still fondly regarded as a damn good game.
